Stories of Missing History Waiting to be Told

There are thousands of mysteriously missing pieces of the puzzle of history waiting to discovered and preserved; and that means thousands of stories waiting to be told.  Here are just a few of them…

Paintings
“Sun and Shadow” by Frank W. Benson: Painted in 1911, oil on canvas; and four other paintings by this important American impressionist.

“Head of a Peasant Woman with a White Cap” by Vincent van Gogh: Painted at Nuenen in January 1885; and other van Gogh paintings.

“Suleyman the Magnificent” by Titian: Date unknown, probably oil on canvas; and other Titian paintings.

“Cymon and Iphigenia” by Benjamin West: Painted in 1763 and exhibited at the London Society of Artists in 1764.

Decorative Arts
Objects from Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello, including four bronze busts, sold off in the early twentieth century.

George Washington’s second sideboard (buffet) from his home, Mount Vernon.  History records that there were two but only one remains at the house.

Benjamin Franklin’s porcelain sauceboats by Bonin & Morris of Philadelphia.

Manuscripts
Eudoxus’s mathematical works: In Greek on parchment.  Spoken of by Archimedes but no copies known to survive

Matthew Harris Jouett’s notes on the painting methods of Gilbert Stuart: Jotted down by Jouett while studying with Stuart in 1816.

All of the items on this tiny list are all from Europe or North America.  When the missing historic objects of Asia, South America and the rest of the world are added a complete list could run to tens of thousands of pieces!
